Fees will include a 2.2% Square transaction fee on top of the entry fee

CATEGORY GUIDELINES / FAQ’S

All categories are non-acquisitive.

 

Ellenbrook Arts Prize: Awarded to the most outstanding work on display in any media. 

2 Dimensional Award: Awarded for excellence in painting, drawing, print or photography.

This category includes artworks created on flat surfaces using traditional or contemporary media such as painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, digital illustration, mixed media, and collage. Works must be presented in two dimensions and suitable for wall display.

Sculpture and 3D Award: Awarded for excellence in 3D media defined as having depth, width and height, must not be framed or flat in appearance.

This category encompasses three-dimensional artworks created through methods such as carving, modeling, casting, assembling, or fabrication. It includes sculpture, ceramics, installation, textile art, and other forms designed to be viewed in the round or from multiple angles.

First Nations Award: Awarded to an Indigenous artist with outstanding work on display.

This category is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. It recognises and celebrates the richness of First Nations culture, storytelling, and artistic practice across any medium. Works may reflect cultural identity, traditional knowledge, connection to Country, or contemporary perspectives.

Emerging Artist Award: Awarded for excellence to an emerging artist 18 years of age or older who is within the first 7 years of their artistic practice.

Open to artists who are in the early stages of their professional practice, typically with less than seven years of exhibiting experience and no major solo exhibitions. This category encourages participation from those developing their artistic voice and building a public profile.

Local Resident Award: Awarded to the most outstanding work that reflects an aspect of the City of Swan region OR created by a resident of the City of Swan.

This award is open exclusively to artists who reside within the boundaries of the City of Swan. It recognises outstanding artistic achievement by local community members across any medium or category. Proof of residency may be required upon entry to validate eligibility.

Young Swan Award: Awarded for excellence to a young and emerging artist 12-17 years of age for an A5 sized entry.

This youth-focused category is open to artists aged 12 to 17 who live, study, or have a strong connection to the City of Swan. It aims to celebrate the creativity of young people and support the next generation of artists in the region.

People’s Choice Award: Awarded to the work that receives the most votes by the people who visit the exhibition and who cast a vote in person. This award is announced at the end of the exhibition.

 

AGE LIMITS

 

Entrants in the Young Swan Award must be aged between 12 and 17 years at the time of entry.

All entrants in this category must provide parent or legal guardian consent along with guardian contact details as part of their submission.

All other entrants should be 18 years or older at the time of entry.

 

ENTRY LIMITS

Artworks must be no more than 12 months old at the time of entry and must be the work of the submitting artist.

To preserve the exclusivity and originality of the exhibition, submitted artworks must not have been previously exhibited in any public exhibition or entered into any art award within the City of Swan or the Greater Perth Region. This includes, but is not limited to, events such as the City of Melville Art Awards, the City of Joondalup Community Art Exhibition, and exhibitions held at the Midland Junction Arts Centre or Fremantle Arts Centre. The Greater Perth Region is defined as extending to, and including, Mandurah, Pinjarra, Murray, Yanchep, Mundaring, and Armadale. Artworks found to be in breach of this condition will be disqualified and withdrawn from the exhibition.


 

All entrants are automatically eligible to win the main prize and the People’s Choice Award, regardless of their age, or any other category that they may enter or win prizes in.

 

Only entrants who live in the City of Swan are eligible for the Local Resident Award.

 

Young artists 12-17 years of age are eligible to enter the Young Swan Award.

Entrants will only be considered in one of the media categories:

  • 2 Dimensional

  • Sculpture and 3D

  • First Nations

  • Emerging Artist

  • Young Swan

 

REGIONAL LIMITS

Entrants must be a Western Australian resident.

 

SIZE LIMITS

 

Young Swan Award entries must be 2 dimensional, 15cm x 21cm (A5 size).

 

Two-dimensional works cannot exceed 110cm in width and 110cm in height and 25kgs in weight.

 

Three-dimensional works cannot exceed 110cm in length, 110cm in width, 110m in height, and 25kgs in weight.

 

NUMBER OF ENTRIES

 

Artists may submit 1 artwork only. A diptych or triptych will only be accepted if it is presented as one artwork, and the elements must adhere to the size restrictions, framed in a single frame, labelled, priced and presented as one work.

 

SELECTION PROCESS

 

Ellenbrook Arts will appoint an external panel to pre-select artworks and will notify both successful and unsuccessful artists by email. Entry fees are non-refundable.

 

EXHIBITION REQUIREMENTS

 

Young Swan Award entries must be submitted on A5 paper without framing.

All other artworks must be submitted in a state that is completed, dry, and ready for installing.

 

We do not recommend submitting unframed work.

 

Due to the hanging system in the gallery, two D-rings are required to be fixed to all hanging works. A D-ring is to be affixed on either side of the frame, approximately 5 cm from the top of the artwork, or in proportion to the artwork. The D-rings should be able to bear the weight of the artwork. Due to the nature of our hanging system and for safety reasons, artworks without conforming hanging mechanisms will be excluded from the exhibition.

 

Plinths of various sizes are used for sculpture; please contact us with you wish to provide your own plinth or if you have unusual display requirements.

 

Artworks are displayed at the discretion of Ellenbrook Arts.

ARTWORK DELIVERY

All artworks must adhere to the Terms and Conditions for entry into the exhibition.

 

All artworks must be delivered to Ellenbrook Arts HQ at 34 Main Street, Ellenbrook on Friday 1 August, 10am - 5pm. Please make arrangements for delivery if you are unable to deliver the item personally on the day.

 

No entries will be accepted if delivered late.

 

All artworks must be submitted with the following details SECURELY attached to the back of the work with the following details:

• Artist’s name

• Artist's contact details

• Artwork title and year of creation

• Price including 30% commission and GST

• Value, if not for sale, for insurance purposes

 

OPENING EVENT

 

All entrants will be invited to attend the opening event with 1 guest.

ELIGIBILITY

 

Board members and staff of the Ellenbrook Cultural Foundation may display an artwork in the exhibition but will not be eligible to win any award.

 

COLLECTION OF ARTWORKS

All unsold works must be collected from Ellenbrook Arts HQ at 34 Main Street, Ellenbrook on 23 September, 10am-5pm. Please make arrangements for collection if you are not able to collect in person on the day.

Please note that the gallery cannot store your artworks and a storage fee may be applied if not collected on the specified date.

In the case of sold works the artist will be advised of any sale within a month after the exhibition finishes and the administration and delivery of sold artworks to buyers carried out by Ellenbrook Arts. Buyer's information will not be shared with the artist for confidentiality.

 

PRICING OF ARTWORKS

 

Artworks can be put up for sale if wished by the artist. The price must not exceed $7,500. If the artwork is not for sale, a value must still be provided. The value of the artwork must not exceed $7,500.  Ellenbrook Arts will retain a 30% commission on the sale of entries.

 

COPYRIGHT

 

The artwork must be the original artwork of the artist and not contravene any copyright law. Ellenbrook Arts may use images of artworks in promoting the exhibition but not for any other purpose unless agreed to by the artist. 

All artworks must be original and created solely by the entering artist. Works must not infringe upon the copyright, moral rights, or intellectual property of any other person. Collaborative works must be clearly declared at the time of entry. The use of AI-generated content must also be disclosed and may not be accepted, depending on curatorial discretion. Any work found to be non-original or in breach of this condition will be disqualified.

 

EXCLUSIONS

 

Failure to comply with any of the above may result in exclusion from the exhibition. Ellenbrook Arts reserves the right to refuse entry or to remove any artwork from the exhibition at any time.

INDEMNITY

Entrants acknowledge that while all reasonable care will be taken, Ellenbrook Arts shall not be liable for any loss, theft, damage or destruction of artworks while on premises of Ellenbrook Arts HQ. Entrants agree to indemnify and hold harmless Ellenbrook Arts, its employees, volunteers and representatives from and against any and all claims, damages, losses, liabilities, costs or expenses arising out of or related to the exhibition or handling of Entrants' work. It is the responsibility of the artist to arrange and maintain their own insurance coverage for artworks submitted for the duration of the exhibition. By entering the Ellenbrook Art Award, Entrants acknowledge and accept these terms.
